Description:

The unorganized township of Cross Lake, ME is located in the St John Valley region of Maine.  The area gets its name from Cross Lake one of the Fish River chain of lakes which are a significant cold-water fishery providing habitat for brook trout, landlocked salmon and lake trout.  Cross Lake Twp. is sparsely populated with farm fields broken up by tracts of forest land.  Potatoes, oats, hay and other crops are grown in the area, and there is a growing beef industry taking root here as well.  Farming and logging are the predominant industries in the area.

Recreational Date

The area is a four-season recreational destination.  The lakes, ponds, rivers and streams are sparkling, clean and full of brook trout, landlocked salmon and lake trout.  The St. John River has become a destination for Muskie fishing, as this species has become firmly established in the cold clear waters of the St. John River watershed.  The farmland interspersed amongst the thousands of acres of rolling timberland is home to ruffed grouse, deer, moose and bear.

Cross Lake is part of the Fish River chain of lakes an area that starts in the Town of Portage Lake and extends into Fort Kent, ME where the Fish River flows into the St. John River.  This area draws anglers from around the world to ply the waters searching for trophy class trout and salmon.  Cross Lake is 2500 acres of cold water fishery.  It has a maximum depth of 46 feet.  The cold-water species of lake trout, brook trout and landlocked salmon thrive here.

An extensive ITS trail system traverses the countryside of the St. John Valley providing winter sports enthusiasts unparalleled snow mobile trail riding.  Trail riders typically can enjoy two to three weeks of good riding conditions compared to the more southern regions of the state.  Much of the area also has a vast atv trail network, allowing a full 4 seasons of trail riding opportunities.
